Pre-release Crackdown Patch

When you run your copy of Crackdown in your 360 for the first time, you will be prompted to download a patch. That’s right, even before the game is released (due Feb 20th) there is already a patch developed, QA’d and released to the market. Reports say that the fix is to limit ‘choppiness’ in the co-op mode on Xbox Live.

On one hand, I think this is a great thing. A game company being responsive to their beta testing and fixing an issue at the best possible time; before anyone really notices it.
On the other hand, it reminds me of my days in software development when we send out an ‘oops’ hotfix on the day of release because someone failed to QA something in just the right way. It has always been my experience that games from major studios are usually less buggy than commercial software. A lot more time is spent play-testing for quality and enjoyability…Except for Chromehounds…that game seemed to be just one big bug.

The Crackdown game is already getting strange glances since its sales are being driven by the Halo 3 beta, so I hope this is a step in the direction of a truely enjoyable game that is able to stand on its own. If not, I hope I can trade it in before the price drops too low.
